South Africa is one of those places every surfer should experience at least once.

From the powerful coastline around Cape Town to the long right-hand point breaks of Jeffreys Bay and the waves around St Francis Bay and Cape St Francis, a surf trip to South Africa offers an incredible variety of waves, conditions and experiences.

And if you’re already planning a holiday to South Africa, it can also be the perfect opportunity to work on your surfing.

I’m Shannon Ainslie, a professional surf coach based in Jeffreys Bay, and through FixMyWave I offer personalized surf coaching, surf filming, video analysis and surf guiding for surfers visiting this part of South Africa.

Why Surf Jeffreys Bay?

Jeffreys Bay — or J-Bay — is known around the world for its long, fast right-hand point breaks.

Most surfers know Supertubes, but J-Bay isn’t just one wave. The coastline has a variety of breaks including Kitchen Windows, Magnatubes, Boneyards, Supertubes, Point, Lower Point and Albatross.

Depending on the swell, wind, tide and your surfing ability, there are opportunities to surf very different types of waves along this stretch of coastline.

That’s one of the things I love about coaching here.

J-Bay gives us an incredible environment to work on wave selection, positioning, speed, line choice, turns, timing and decision-making.

Surfing isn’t simply about trying harder.

It’s about making better decisions, faster.

More Than Just Surf Lessons

My coaching isn’t about standing on the beach telling you to bend your knees.

I work primarily with intermediate, advanced and competitive surfers who can already surf but want to understand why some waves feel incredible while others don’t quite come together.

Depending on your level, goals and the conditions, we can combine different types of coaching during your stay.

In-Water Surf Coaching

Sometimes the best way to improve is for me to surf alongside you.

In-water coaching allows me to help with your positioning in the lineup, wave selection, takeoff position and the decisions you’re making while actually surfing.

There’s a huge amount happening before you even stand up.

Where you’re sitting, which wave you choose, where you take off and how you position yourself for the first section can determine what happens throughout the rest of the wave.

Often, improving those decisions can change your surfing more than simply trying to perform a maneuver differently.

Surf Filming and Video Analysis

Video is one of the most powerful coaching tools I use.

What we feel we’re doing on a wave and what we’re actually doing can be completely different.

I can film your surfing and then break the footage down with you, looking at your positioning, speed, technique, body movement, timing, line choice and decision-making throughout the wave.

Instead of simply telling you to surf better, I want you to understand what happened, why it happened and what you can change on your next surf.

You can then take that information straight back into the water while the session is still fresh in your mind.

Land-Based Surf Coaching

Not every coaching session needs to happen in the water.

We can sit down with your footage, analyze waves in detail and work through specific areas of your surfing.

That might include your bottom turn, top turn, re-entry, carve, cutback, speed generation, positioning, competition strategy or learning to recognize what the wave is asking you to do earlier.

One of the ideas I constantly come back to with surfers is:

The wave already told you what to do — you just heard it late.

Learning to recognize those opportunities earlier can completely change the way you surf.

Surf Guiding Around Jeffreys Bay, St Francis Bay and Cape St Francis

Sometimes you don’t need a technical coaching session. You simply want someone with local experience to help you find the right waves for the conditions and your surfing ability.

That’s where surf guiding can become part of the experience.

If you’re staying in Jeffreys Bay, St Francis Bay or Cape St Francis, we can look at the conditions and decide where it makes the most sense to surf.

This part of the Eastern Cape has a beautiful coastline with different surf spots and conditions within driving distance of one another.

For someone visiting from overseas or another part of South Africa, having local knowledge can mean spending less of your holiday driving around looking for waves and more time actually surfing.

Coming From Cape Town?

Cape Town and Jeffreys Bay can work brilliantly as part of the same South African surf holiday.

You might spend part of your trip exploring Cape Town and the surrounding coastline before travelling along the coast toward Jeffreys Bay, St Francis Bay and Cape St Francis.

Once you reach J-Bay, you can make this the performance-focused part of your trip.

Surf, get filmed, review the footage, make adjustments and then take those changes back into the water.

Instead of returning home with only memories of great waves, you can return home surfing better than when you arrived.

Coaching Built Around You

Every surfer is different.

You might want one coaching session to identify what’s holding you back.

You might want several days of intensive coaching.

You might want me in the water with you one morning and filming you the next.

Or perhaps you’re travelling with your family and only have certain mornings available to surf.

That’s why I prefer to build the coaching around your surfing level, your goals, the waves and the conditions rather than forcing every surfer through exactly the same program.

The goal is simple:

Help you understand your surfing better and make your time in South Africa count.

Who Is My Surf Coaching For?

My coaching is particularly suited to intermediate, advanced and competitive surfers who already surf but want to progress.

You might be struggling with consistency.

Maybe you’re not getting the waves you want in crowded lineups.

Maybe you have speed but struggle to convert it into good turns.

Maybe you can perform the maneuver, but your timing or positioning means you’re attempting it on the wrong section.

Or perhaps your surfing works well in familiar conditions but becomes more difficult when the waves get faster, bigger or more powerful.

These are the kinds of problems I enjoy working through with surfers.

Because surfing is ultimately problem solving under pressure.

Make Your South African Surf Trip Count

If you’re travelling to Jeffreys Bay, St Francis Bay or Cape St Francis, you don’t necessarily need to know exactly what type of coaching you need before you arrive.

Get in touch with me through FixMyWave and tell me where you’re staying, when you’ll be here, your surfing level and what you’d like to improve.

From there, we can look at the best way to use your time — whether that’s in-water surf coaching, surf filming, video analysis, land-based coaching, surf guiding or a combination of them.

South Africa already has the waves.

Let’s make sure you make the most of them.
